Sampeyre, the kingdom of cats in the mountains of the Varaita Valley.
It's no coincidence that Sampeyre is so "feline." In the past, in all the villages of the valley, cats were indispensable for protecting grain and supplies from mice. Today, that function has disappeared, but the love for these animals remains. Residents respect them, feed them discreetly, and ensure they are sterilized thanks to the work of volunteers and local associations.
During the long, snowy winters, when Sampeyre is blanketed in white and the silence is broken only by the crackling of the stove, the cats take refuge in the stables, barns, or small cabins just outside the village. But with the first rays of spring sunshine, they immediately return to guard the village, like ancient guardians.
The cat that stops time
There's something therapeutic in observing the lives of these cats. While humans run, they teach the art of rest. In Sampeyre, stretched out on a wooden bench in front of a coffee shop, you can learn to see the world through their eyes: every ray of sunshine is an event, every caress a luxury, every chase through the leaves an epic adventure.
For feline lovers, Sampeyre is much more than a hiking destination. It is a secular sanctuary, a place where cats are still masters of their own destiny, free to climb rooftops or sleep in an ancient fountain without anyone chasing them away.
Visit Sampeyre... following a cat
If you're planning a trip to the Varaita Valley, let yourself be guided. Park your car in the lower part of town and walk up to the historic center. Don't look for tourist directions: simply follow the first cat you encounter. He'll lead you to the most authentic places: a secret courtyard, a stone washhouse, a flower-filled balcony overlooking the mountains.
And when the cat stops, crouched on a staircase, stop too. Sit next to him. For a moment, you'll be part of Sampeyre: a small village where time passes slowly, the air is fresh, and the cats—the true protagonists—will give you a smile without asking for anything in return.
Useful information: Sampeyre can be reached from Saluzzo by following the SP 105 of the Varaita Valley. The village offers several refreshment points and mountain hut accommodations. Don't miss, if you're in the area, the Brusà Sanctuary and the climb to the Sampeyre pass (2,284 m), one of the highest Alpine passes in the Western Alps. Remember: if you encounter one of the village cats, a simple "pss pss" might be enough to make you a friend... but always respect their freedom.
